She said that this is the most important stage for the creation of the person. This plane is divided into two parts: from 0 to 3 years: the faculties are created, then from 3 to 6 years: they are refined and develop in a conscious way. The child increases his autonomy, develops specific vocabulary of his language, orders and classifies his environment and acquires coordination of movements. He begins to develop a social and moral conscience.

Help ME TO DO IT MYSELF

The best known example of the prepared Montessori environment is that offered by the 3-6 year old class. At this age, the child consolidates his self-formation as an individual being. The environment is set up as a bridge between the house and the rest of the world.

Montessori Material for the class 3-6 years:

« Practical life »: These are the first materials the child will encounter in the Children’s House. These daily activities should be familiar to the child as they are things that he can see at home, such as « pouring », dressing frames or polishing. While helping the child’s independence and autonomy through the acquisition of a particular skill, the main purpose of these activities is to help children develop their ability to concentrate and coordinate their movements.

Sensory: Sensory material responds to how a child of this age learns through the senses, rather than directly through intellect. There is material for the refinement of each sense. The materials encourage continuous exploration and interaction and they follow a remarkable system of progression. Later, in the following years, new aspects of some of the sensory materials unfold. At preschool age, when the child is sensitive to sensory information, these materials bring order to the child, enabling him to make sense of his world and increase his perception of it, flourishing his sense of wonder and curiosity.

Mathematics: The ability to count, calculate, write, or read will result from the time the child spends in this prepared environment, without being a direct goal. By working with the different sensory materials, the child has refined his discrimination of size to the point where he now wants to know ‘how much more’ an object is compared to another. The mathematical material naturally arises from this perception. When a child reaches this point, he needs to be introduced to the notion of number to support his interest.

Language: The same applies with language. The subtle preparation that the child received daily in this environment – rich in orality, discussions, songs, stories and poems, but also work on control of movement of the hand by indirect exercises, allows the child to begin effortlessly writing and reading from the age of 4 to 5 Years. Montessori Education has been using an effective synthetic phonetic reading system for 100 years, demonstrating excellent results. At the center of this system is a set of « rough letters » cut out of sandpaper, the children see and touch these symbols and pronounce the corresponding sound, absorbing the combination of sound and symbol through three different senses simultaneously (hearing-view-touch).

Culture: Finally, through language and sensory extensions, the Montessori material opens up the world surrounding the child by allowing him to discover cultural subjects such as geography, zoology and botany. Like everything that is offered to children of this age, the material is based on the senses and is introduced in an orderly manner, first the reality and the images and finally reading that will generate culture.

Arts: Art is integrated into the child’s day in the same way as the other subjects.
